of July last in nay family, and I venture to think a few brief notes <>f them may not be devoid of intei'est, as the remedy I found successful in their treatment?quinine,?has been only recently noticed in the columns of Lancet, and well deserves to be widely known. Case 1.?An infant ten months old, stout and healthy, but teething, was brought iu contact with another child convalescing from hooping-cough, and was seized with cough, which, in from eight to ten days, became suffocative in character, and soon after developed a well marked whoop. The paroxysms were very frequent and distressing at night, and the retardation of the return of blood from the head was shewn by a puffy state of the eye-lids, and general turgescence of the face. The expectoration which was glairy and scanty at the onset, became in the hooping stage muco-purulent and abundant, but so tenacious that it was with difficulty expelled from the larynx, and at times was ejected with such force as to seem to issue from a pop-gun. In this case emetics of ipecacuanha were given every morning, and occasionally at night when the bronchial tubes appeared obstructed by an excessive accumulation of the tenacious secretion, and a mixture of the extract of belladonna with the bromide of potassium was exhibited ; but

Notes of a Case of Hooping Cough, with Remarks on Nervous Dyspnœa
(Doctor West on " Diseases of Infancy and Childhood," 4th edition, pages 439 et seq.) should think it necessary to write some pages of warning to practitioners against the danger of overtreatinji, or rather mistaking mere functional affection of the brain occurring in hooping cough for inflammatory diseases of the lungs, has induced me to make the following remarks, founded on the observations ...

cough and whooping cough, on convulsions, on diphtheria and on cerebral infantile paralysis. Malaria is given a rather large place as a cause of symptoms not usually attributed to it; it is held responsible for diarrhoea, bronchitis, and rigidity of the neck, the characteristics of all of them being that they are periodic and yield to quinine. The blemishes in the book are of various kinds. In ...
متن کاملClinical Pharmacology of the Antimalarial Quinine in Children
Quinine is the best studied drug for treating severe malaria in very young children. Quinine may be administered in pregnancy and, at therapeutic doses, malformations have not been reported. Some strains of quinine from Southeast Asia and South America have become resistant. Quinine is the treatment of choice for the drug-resistant severe Plasmodium falciparum. The antimalarial mechanism of qui...

Sir,?With reference to my letter on intravenous administration of quinine in your issue of October, in which some very severe malarial infections had been successfully treated in this way, I have since had a case in which the injection proved fatal. I forward notes of the case so that the cases previously recorded may not be misleading. MrsB., European, 31, female, admitted on 20th September, 1...
متن کاملKinetics of hula hooping: an inverse dynamics analysis.
This paper involved a biomechanical analysis of lower limb joint coordination during hula hooping. A lower extremity inverse dynamics model that incorporated kinematic input and force platform data was developed to compute the angular velocities, moments about and powers produced at the lower extremity joints. The abductor moments and powers were discovered to be paramount in maintaining hoop o...
